Now, I think that feedback is a WONDERFUL thing, just as much as the next guy, but actually providing written feedback on all papers that go on the board is quite time consuming. If you know anything about me (and from this post you just might), you know that I practically wallpaper my room with student work. So giving feedback on all of the papers would have me at school until the cows come home. To avoid that, but still have some feedback on each paper I put up, I have created these little tools to help me.
Just GUESS where I made them ;) |
You can see it hangs off slightly. This is so that when the final draft is over it, you can see the sticky hanging out just a teeny bit. |
I use the stamp in the same way. Though usually I use it on papers that are going directly in their portfolio. I just like the look of the stickers more for bulletin boards.
I can not tell you how much easier life has been with them. Since there is only a finite amount of space on each one, my commenting has become quick and to the point. (instead of just writing on the paper itself, which I really don't like to do...what if I make a mistake and have to cross it out??? This takes the pressure off me ;) ) It also gives the students a bit of feedback, without having to write a novel. Since for most of the work that is up on the bulletin board has been through conferencing and we have discussed it already, these little tools make my life so much easier, but still help me to meet the bulletin board requirement at my school. And, they look really cute ;)
Do you have to put feedback on all of your displayed student work? How do you do it?
Ohhhhh - what a GREAT idea!!! (Vistaprint, right???). Our board is just starting to ask for descriptive feedback posted visibly on all work posted on bulletin boards. Was there an adjustment period for your students when their marks were up for all to see? Our are used to getting their marks back and completing peer and self reflections, but as of yet, haven't had to have their marks posted for all to see.

My students have been getting feedback for years, so these kids have never known anything different. The first few years (which really was years ago), I don't remember anything major when we started doing it. I don't put their grades on the front if I can help it (sometimes there is no choice) so maybe that is why it hasn't been a huge issue??
DeleteI love this idea!

Your comment made my day :)
DeleteNo, we don't have to do that, but I'm in 2nd, so there isn't MUCH to comment on - except for usual spelling and grammar and punctuation! ha!! But I Am LOVING those stickers!!♥ Jen

Even our KINDERS have to have feedback on their work!
DeleteI LOVE this idea!! Do you manage to get all of those labels from Vista free when there are deals? I've been so tempted by Vista (how could any PT girl not be??) but I've never actually tried...
ReplyDeleteThanks for the constant inspiration Steph--I feel like I get a recharge for my teacher battery every time I come here!

I ONLY buy from VP when it is free. I also like to wait until they have the $1 or $5 shipping deals (which are very rare) So I make things, put them in my portfolio, and wait until the deal comes skipping by.
DeleteTwo summers ago, when my addiction started, I got everything I could possibly need for my classroom for a grand total of $50. All of that was shipping....but on the $5 deal. Then last year, I replenished for around the same amount with the $1 shipping on $5 purchase.
I LOVE Vista Print. When the deals happen it really is like crack to me. ;)
WOW!!! We are not required to place feedback on student work. Sometimes I will post a runric for the assignment, but some things like group posters, projects I put up when they are finished and the students get their feedback forms but it is not nec. on the form. I kinda feel a bit mixed about publically displaying grades...some kids want things taken down if they do not get the grade/feedback they like and I dont want that to be the reason for the board..more of a celebration. I love your stickies though...Ill have to check this vista print thing out!!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! We must have a rubric with feedback attached to everything...... So tedious....Another great idea to share with my colleagues that I found on your blog..KEEP IT UP STEPHANIE!

You Rock!!! Terrific idea!!!!!
ReplyDeleteSeriously, I am obsessed with your blog! This is an amazing idea. My school requires everything be graded by a rubric scale (letter grade) and these stickers and stamp would be amazing. I will be looking out for a good VP deal and stealing this idea!!!!

Thinking Out Loud
Could you make it into a stamper instead? That would be handy!
ReplyDeleteI actually do have a stamper! (it is shown in the picture) And you are right...it is handy!
DeleteI love your idea and will be your next blog follower! I have a question though about the board's requirement. Do you post various works or all the same? How does it work when a student doesn't do well at all on a paper? What if you have a student who is struggling and his/her "best" isn't close to the others?? I'm REALLY curious! Thanks!!

How do you keep a record of your feedback? I'm guessing you have something clever going on that way too?
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! I am struggling to find the time to give all my students effective feedback. Our curriculum is so full, with lots of specialist activities as well that it is so hard to even find the time to teach our equivalent of the common core. Thanks, I am going to give this a go!
